Why you should love this month

March 1, 2016

blog_772311_2862411_1456965041I love March!  It happens to be my birthday month, but it is also a time whereHOPE is RISING, and the newness that is SPRING is right around the corner.  (CHEERS TO MY FELLOW PISCES!). It’s no surprise EASTER and PASSOVER fall into the March/April season each year. I leave you today with a few things you should look forward to this month!

  1. I decided when my boys started school that I would ALWAYS CELEBRATE SPRING BREAK even when they are out of school regardless if I’m 35 or 95.  I encourage you to work on scheduling a spring break this week.  Sometime this month, take a day or several to do something you love!  As simple as an early spring picnic, a day fishing, a long walk in the woods…anything that makes your soul breathe deeply.  If you do this, I’d love to hear about your adventure.
  2. Calling all sports fans!  Even though I’m not a big college basketball fan, this month, I am definitely on the band wagon!  HELLO NCAA MARCH MADNESS. The games, the “brackets” the way the community comes together and hovers around TVS in living rooms, restaurants, airports, and wherever they might be… The sheer excitement.(Also of note, Sporting KC kicks off the season in March)
  3. Regardless of the weather, which looks pretty decent actually for March, March gives us the season’s new and HAPPY COLORS (and for us gals, allows us to contemplate that moment where we soon can toss the boots and tights deep into our closets and bring out the sandals!  Woot Woot!)   HAPPY COLORS signify HOPE and as we step out onto our proverbial “front porches” we begin a season of EXPECTANCY!

I hope that you will make it GREAT!

A greater understanding: 3 simple thoughts

blog_770835_2858982_1456442941

I would love for you all to stop and take a look at this photo.

You likely don’t know what it represents so allow me to share. This was taken a mere 7 days ago in Bethlehem, near the wall that has been erected to block the fighting between Palestine and Israel. (Formally known as the Israeli West Bank barrier- spanning 430 miles.) The “wall’s” first segment was complete in 2003. From 2000-2003 there were 73 suicide bombing carried out in this area called the West Bank and in the period after built, 8/2003 to 12/2006, there were only 12 attacks. The “wall” built to protect civilians seems to be doing the job that was intended at first glance.

On the other side of the story, these children I photographed do not know life without the “wall” and their government (Palestinian) would argue that the barrier includes reduced freedoms including access to medical care and educational services, as well as limiting access to water sources and ultimately economic effects.

In summary, the United Nations 2005 reports states it best, “…it is difficult to overstate the humanitarian impact of the Barrier.”

As I always promise to keep these blogs short and thought-provoking, I want to simply ask today that you think about this situation. There are of course multiple issues surrounding this topic, so I don’t want to minimalize it, but I do want us to think about how this matters to us in the United States. Here are three simple thoughts to get you started…

  1. The world is really a small place- As ISIS and other threats seem to close in, should we really be so simple-minded to think that couldn’t exist here in the USA? This election IS IMPORTANT. We must take the time to learn about the candidates and vote responsibily.
  2. Education is critical. It occurs to me that I had no real understanding that this existed a few days ago.  My children likely know a bit less than I do and they are 19. We must do better and gain a greater understanding of our world.
  3. PEACE should be top of mind for our prayers and in our actions.  Where can you promote peace?  Where can you promote a greater understanding? My friend Mindy Corporon who lost her son and father tragically by a sick man almost two years ago, has launched an initiative called Seven Days, whose goal is to promote just this- A greater understanding.  I urge you to check out the site and  pick out one or two events that you will attend during this year’s activities which run from April 12-18 in our area. SEEK PEACE AT ALL COSTS.

Happy New Year!

December 31, 2015

blog_751344_2828123_1451539922

I love a fresh clean page. A new journal to start off the year!

As we close down 2015 today I pray that you will reflect on your year with pride and gratitude for great memories and great lessons. Both memories and lessons make us who we are. Develop our character, our attitudes, refine us and grow us!

I’ll be praying for each of you to have your best year ever. In order to do this, you have to put some work in. What would it look like on 12/31/2016 if you were to truly say it was your best year ever? Document that. Pray over it. Believe it. Take action and be amazed! Let me know if you do take the time to do this and I’d love to cheer you on!

Never Be The Last Person To Leave A Party

September 1, 2015

blog_715800_2772572_1441075586Living a LIFE OF EXCELLENCE starts out with simple advice sometimes!  On Friday, the Kansas CIty Business Journal hosted their annual Women Who Mean Business luncheon which honors the latest group of Kansas City’s female business executives, named as the top 25 women in business (for profit businesses only) in Kansas City.

During the event, each honoree offers the audience their best advice.  This one was a UNIVERSAL FAVORITE!  Unfortunately, I didn’t capture her name, but trust me, I’ll track her down, because there’s not much better than a smart, well accomplished leader, with a sense of humor!!

No matter if you are talking to a 13 year old going to their first birthday party sans mom and dad, or you are a corporate executive, this stands as SOLID ADVICE.

Here’s why:

  1. As “mom” always said, “Nothing good ever happens after dark….” (Or past midnight…. you get the point.)  As I always remind my friends and colleagues, “I go to bed after Lawrence Welk.”
  2. It’s always a good idea to HAVE FUN but not TOO MUCH FUN!
  3. If you are the last person to leave the party, you may end up with a bad tattoo!  Think dolphins swimming in different directions, an ‘ode to how much you love Kale, or a photo replica of your favorite president.

Two take aways:

  1. Seriously, a life of excellence is forged by creating GOOD HABITS that mirror your values and bring honor to your life goals.
  2. By all means, HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR!  Life is simply too crazy not to stop and laugh!  This gal knew how to bring a laugh to the entire room! I loved that and so did everyone else!

Have a blessed day and thanks again so much for reading!

And Here’s What Went Down.

August 9, 2015

blog_709281_2762514_1439151037Happy Sunday everyone!  This one will be short, as it is our families “MOVE IN” WEEKEND for the first son to go off to COLLEGE…  A lot of emotional and physical energy invested…I’m sure in some way, shape or form each of you reading this understand that feeling!

Here are some random thoughts to wrap up the week!  The theme this week for the blog has been “What if we were having this much fun?” In no particular order this is what I’m thinking right now.

  1. I should have given some thought to that theme this week. Seriously, sending your child off to college is not particularly fun and as much as I want to “drum” up some enthusiasm, it’s simply not happening folks.  Ever been there?
  2. Okay, having said that, the overall move couldn’t have been easier. Lots of young men eager to help and Tucker even let me make his bed (my mom heart liked that a lot) I love it when a community comes together and that is what happened.
  3. On that note, there were a host of other anxious parents, and some dedicated university staff that are committed to ensuring the success of our students.  I want to point that out.  What a tremendous blessing it is that we have educators that have literally put their entire life on task for this purpose.  THANK GOD FOR THESE BRAVE SOULS!  We are all in this together is the bottom line….
  4. FINALLY, HE WILL DEFINITELY EXPERIENCE THIS WEEK’S THEME… OVER AND OVER AGAIN … COLLEGE is made for FUN!  For today, remember those moments when you were young, and try to REINVENT them this week. My favorite was the annual Lamda Chi WATERMELON FEST… Wonder if there is an “adult” version of that I could drum up?

HAVE AN AMAZING WEEK EVERYONE!  For those sending their kids off to school, take a DEEP BREATH and WALK RIGHT INTO IT!  MAKE A DECISION TO RELISH IN THE JOY OF THIS NEW STAGE, be it Kindergarten, Middle School, Senior Year or the one and only first day of COLLEGE!

What If We Left The Path?

August 6, 2015

blog_707301_2760618_1438657653WHAT IF… WE ALL WERE HAVING THIS MUCH FUN!?

Okay, seriously, does this look AWESOME or WHAT?  I have no idea if this is real or a really creative photographer or photoshop guru, but needless to say, IT CATCHES YOUR ATTENTION.  The “cool factor” of the city, the clearly way too high waterslide, and the FEEL that this kid is taking on the world in some weird way.

This week we are chatting about FUN- This photo brings my attention to one of life’s great truths, which is the good ole’ fashioned line,  “NO RISK NO REWARD”, or said in a much more eloquent manner…

“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson …Assuming of course that their is reward in leaving a trail!

Thanks Mr. Emerson for the QUESTION OF THE DAY.

WHAT IF WE LEFT THE PATH (WHAT PATH?) AND BLAZED A TRAIL….

I have to start with the first question I’d ask myself…

What TRAIL needs BLAZED?  Is it at HOME, work, OUR COMMUNITY, IS IT FOR SIMPLE PLEASURE- Should I jump out of a perfectly good airplane or bungee jump, or just walk across the street and invite my neighbors over for ice cream?   Can it be a small walk and still be worthwhile and FUN?  I really don’t want to jump out of a plane yet, maybe when I’m 90.

Is there anyway that BLAZING could be FUN?  I am not a fan of pain in pretty much any way.

blog_707301_2760621_1438657653If I GET OFF OF THE PATH, who will go with me?  I NEED MY TRIBE TO BE IN ON THIS!  Is there someone new that I might meet that would make this MORE FUN? Who makes me a BETTER PERSON?  WHO ENRICHES MY LIFE?  I need more of THEM and LESS of the distractions….

You may have guessed my routine by now:  WHAT IF WE ALL STOPPED WHAT WE WERE DOING and made a short list of THE TRAIL THAT WE NEED TO BLAZE TO ADD JOY TO OUR LIVES?!

What If We Had More Fun?

August 4, 2015

blog_707283_2760597_1438651575WHAT IF… WE ALL WERE HAVING THIS MUCH FUN!?

Okay, seriously, when I found this picture, I just thought WOW! I want to hang out with those guys.  Seriously, at least for this day, for this moment in time, they were LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST- ALL OUT FUN!

This week, let’s give some thought to just that.

WHAT IF I PLANNED TO HAVE ALL OUT FUN MORE OFTEN?

What would my week look like this week?  Would my days be richer?

Would my family and friends experience a change?  Would they want to laugh too?

Would I share more funny stories with my kids about my childhood or about Grandpa George because his stories are inevitably much funnier (exaggerated or not…)

Would we maybe have a spontaneous dance party?  Head to the toy section of Target to get some nerf water guns or host a wild and wacky tea party?  Go catch fireflies?

WHAT IF we all took a moment to send someone a FUNNY TEXT, EMAIL or  VOICEMAIL RIGHT THIS MINUTE?  WHAT IF… we all experienced MORE JOY BECAUSE OF THIS ONE THING??

Let the FUN BEGIN…. I leave you with one of those classic songs that is bound to make you SMILE!

A STORY that LASTS! Part 3

August 2, 2015

blog_706692_2757647_1438536645

We’ve wrapped up another week and on our way down the runway back to school and summer’s final long days.  This week, the focus has been on OUR STORY.

Today, about the idea that “you could miss it.”  This could also be thought of in how you may regret missing some of those MOMENTS, that take our breath away.

Susie Steiner, a writer for the Guardian, recapped Bronnie Ware’s well known book, “The Top Five Regrets of the Dying.” Within Ware’s book, she did a really nice job in putting together a study that is valid and can teach us all a few things from the wisdom she gained as a palliative nurse in Australia.

Here is an excerpt I think you’ll appreciate.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________

“There was no mention of more sex or bungee jumps.”

Ware writes of the phenomenal clarity of vision that people gain at the end of their lives, and how we might learn from their wisdom. When questioned about any regrets they had or anything they would do differently, she says, “common themes surfaced again and again.”

Here are the top five regrets of the dying, as witnessed by Ware.

1. I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected
of me.

“This was the most common regret of all. When people realise that their life is almost over and look back clearly on it, it is easy to see how many dreams have gone unfulfilled. Most people had not honoured even a half of their dreams and had to die knowing that it was due to choices they had made, or not made.”

2. I wish I hadn’t worked so hard.

“This came from every male patient that I nursed. They missed their children’s youth and their partner’s companionship. Women also spoke of this regret, but as most were from an older generation, many of the female patients had not been breadwinners. All of the men I nursed deeply regretted spending so much of their lives on the treadmill of a work existence.”  (note to working women everywhere… we can learn from the men who forged the working world before we entered the scene.)

3. I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.

“Many people suppressed their feelings in order to keep peace with others. As a result, they settled for a mediocre existence and never became who they were truly capable of becoming. Many developed illnesses relating to the bitterness and resentment they carried as a result.”

4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.

“Often they would not truly realise the full benefits of old friends until their dying weeks and it was not always possible to track them down. Many had become so caught up in their own lives that they had let golden friendships slip by over the years. There were many deep regrets about not giving friendships the time and effort that they deserved. Everyone misses their friends when they are dying.”

5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.

“This is a surprisingly common one. Many did not realise until the end that happiness is a choice. They had stayed stuck in old patterns and habits. The so-called ‘comfort’ of familiarity overflowed into their emotions, as well as their physical lives. Fear of change had them pretending to others, and to their selves, that they were content, when deep within, they longed to laugh properly and have silliness in their life again.”
__________________________________________________________________________________________________

I personally appreciated this information today and I hope you will as well.  For me, I am going to work on #4.  I have so many great friends and I need to make the effort to make this a top priority!  What are you thinking?

Life is all about our choices, and thanks to FERRIS BUELLER, my readers this week get to pause and consider if their STORY is ROLLING HOW THEY ENVISION!   My prayer is that you all have taken this week to assess just that, and CREATE YOUR PERFECT STORY!

A STORY that LASTS!

July 28, 2015

blog_704669_2757647_1438034111

Who doesn’t love Ferris Bueller?   I always wished I was that “gal” that could just take life in stride and break all of the rules and EXPERIENCE IT ALL OUT!  Okay, to be fair, some of my college friends may think I did just that, and actually I did, but only for a few months my freshman year… After all, mud wrestling is something all freshman girls should try…  It was a blast, but a little too risky for my SOUL!

This week, let’s think about this quote-

  • Today let’s chat briefly about it “moving fast”
  • Thursday, “looking around” and
  • Sunday, “you could miss it.”

Three great thoughts…

IT’S MOVING FAST….

Like really fast!  Like it’s already August and I feel like summer should just be getting started.  I mean, I haven’t even had a picnic yet!  Yeah, I may blog about that soon because I’m fascinated by the intrigue and fun picnics typically bring… playing frisbee, experiencing fantastic wine and cheese (minus the bugs), and of course, the Kansas City humidity!

We all want to have A LIFE THAT EQUALS A GREAT STORY. One that can be told for generations.  What did we offer?  What did we make better?  How are others better because of us?

So, today, my charge to you, my fantastic readers, who are hanging in with me as I start this writing adventure…  is this…

DEFINE WHAT YOU ARE DOING TODAY THAT MAKES YOUR STORY EXACTLY HOW YOU HOPE IT TO BE.

Once defined, WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO TODAY TO ADD VALUE TO THAT STORY?  and of course… SCHEDULE THAT THING or better yet, DO IT TODAY!

My prayer is that you are living the life of your greatest hopes!  It is such a pleasure to “do life” with each of you!
